The West Pinnacle is a forbidding spire which is often considered the third summit of Mount Heyburn. It is located WSW of Heyburn’s high point. It was first climbed in 1948 by R. Widrig, J. Hieb, W. Grande and G. Matthews via the Class 6 Tunnel Route which is set out in the book on Page 173. There were no other reported ascents of the West Pinnacle until Kaden Platt and Max Pilling climbed the peak in 2026. Kaden’s report is set out below. USGS Mount Cramer/SW

Access

Same as for Mount Heyburn. Kaden and Max’s route starts from the Heyburn West Pinnacle saddle.

Northeast Face, YDS 5.10c by Kaden Platt

Approach as same for Heyburn Stur Chimney. Gain the saddle between the two Heyburn West Pinnacles. The easy part of the route is described as the “Tunnel route” in the old literature [Page 173]. Scramble up and the NE ridge, while trying to stay North of the ridge line as much as possible. As you reach the second false summit, you do a ‘belly roll’, then through a tunnel formed by a large balanced boulder.

After the tunnel, base of the climb is easy accessed.

Despite the loose looking flakes, the climbing passed the first 20 feet, is pretty solid.

Recommend bringing a single up to #3, and doubles in .0-.3, 50m rope for a single rope rappel. Then downclimb the Tunnel route.
