Elevation: 10,256 ft
Prominence: 397
Climbing and access information for this peak is on Page 303 of the book. Elevation is based on recent LiDAR measurements. The USGS Quad shows an elevation of 10256. Also see The Deer Creek Foursome by Livingston Douglas for additional information. Updated October 2025
Smithie Peak is located above the headwaters of both Smithie Creek and the West Fork of Deer Creek in the Lemhi Range. It is most easily climbed in combination with nearby Negro Peak (10,573 feet) or Peak 10336. Smithie Peak can also be climbed directly from the Deer Creek drainage to its east. USGS Gilmore
Access
Same as for Negro Peak (10,573 feet). This is the second leg of a 4-peak adventure that includes Negro Peak, Smithie Peak, Peak 10336, and Peak 10177. It covers 11.5 miles with 4,600 feet of elevation gain round trip.
Map Errors
The USGS topo map fails to show the old road (now a foot trail) that continues up Deer Creek well past the two old cabins where the jeep/ATV trail ends at about 8,360 feet.
Northeast Ridge, Class 2
The Climb
From the 9,737-foot connecting saddle with Negro Peak, scramble southwest up a ridge crest of easy talus/scree with some scattered pines. The ridge bends left/south high up. Scramble south in easy talus/scree and tundra to reach an initial rocky point. Continue south to the cairned high point of Smithie Peak.

Smithie Peak as viewed from Negro Peak to its northeast. My ascent route climbs the northeast ridge (right of center) then continues left/south-southeast to the summit. Livingston Douglas Photo

South Ridge, Class 2
The Descent
From the summit, follow the ridge crest of talus/scree and scattered pines south then south-southeast down into a pine forest to reach the forested connecting saddle with Peak 10336. This 9,859-foot saddle concludes the second leg of today’s 4-peak journey. Peak 10336/Deer Creek Peak is up next.
