Peak 5605 and its neighbor Peak 5577 are located northwest of Carey, Idaho in the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains. This area is a mix of private and public land, so be careful. This multi-peak climb is almost entirely on BLM land. USGS Carey

Access

From the north end of Carey on US-20/US-26, turn left/west onto [signed] Little Wood Reservoir Road. This road bends right/north after 0.5 miles. At 1.1 miles, reach a signed junction with Dry Creek Road. Turn left/west onto Dry Creek Road and reset your odometer. Drive west then northwest on this maintained county road for 2.7 miles and park alongside the road about 75 yards northwest of a junction with an overgrown, weak 2-track road that heads diagonally right/north.

Unfortunately, there is no place to park at the base of this 2-track road. My pullout was at 4,912 feet and 43°20’04.6”N, 114°00’23.3”W. This is the first leg of a 2-peak adventure that includes Peak 5605 and Peak 5577. It covers 3.0 miles with 1,275 feet of elevation gain round trip.

The Climb

From Dry Creek Road, bushwhack east to an open cattle gate and an old 2-track road. The stiff cattle fence is too difficult to cross so this public-access gate is handy. Hike up the overgrown 2-track northeast on the right/southeast side of a dry gully that leads to the connecting saddle between Peak 5605 and Peak 5577. The old 2-track road becomes a cattle trail higher up. After the cattle trail flames out, scramble east up a minor ridge or thick-ish sagebrush with gaps. The terrain becomes much rockier as you advance but there are some open sections of short grass/scrub and ground talus. Reach the northwest high up (above the connecting saddle) and follow it southeast to the rocky summit of Peak 5605.

The Descent

From the summit, descend the rock-and-sagebrush ridge northwest and move left-ish to reach the gentle connecting saddle with Peak 5577 at 5,180 feet. This concludes the first leg of today’s 2-peak journey. Peak 5577 is up next.
