Peak 6196 is a ranked hump that sits above Triplet Canyon and is west-southwest, and across from, the more-impressive Triplet Butte. It is often climbed in combination with nearby Bernards Bedground. Both of these peaks are in an extreme southern section of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. USGS Triplet Butte
Access
Same as for Bernards Bedground. This is the second leg of a 2-peak adventure that includes Bernards Bedground and Peak 6196. It covers 4.0 miles with 565 feet of elevation gain round trip.
North Ridge, Class 2
The Climb
From the narrow gully crossing that is the low point between Bernards Bedground and Peak 6196, bushwhack southwest up the clumpy, gapped field grass on the broad north ridge of Peak 6196. Higher up, head left-ish/south to reach Point 6094. The mostly-bare high point of this ridge hump is obvious and is at (or near) its southwest end. From Point 6094, descend southwest in sagebrush and cross a minor saddle. Continue south up to a false summit hump. From there, head south-southeast to the measured high point of Peak 6196. I built a modest cairn of dinner-plate shale on the summit.
North Gully, Class 2
The Descent
From the summit, return down the north ridge to the final ridge saddle, which sits at the head of a prominent dry gully to its left/west. Leave the ridge and follow this gully northwest then north. The gully terrain is initially sagebrush and then becomes clumpy field grass and clumpy dirt. When the gully bends right-ish/northeast, leave the gully and head north-northwest back to your parked vehicle along the spur road.
