Peak 6345 sits above Smith Creek, Tiger Creek, and Strawberry Creek in a forested area north of Prairie, Idaho. It is a seldom-visited summit. This area is a mix of private and public land, so be careful. This climb is entirely on National Forest land. USGS Prairie

Access

From downtown Prairie at a signed junction of Prairie Road and Smith Creek Road, drive north on Smith Creek Road. At 2.5 miles, go right to stay on FSR-175/Smith Creek Road. The road is narrow and very pothole-ridden now. At 3.1 miles, reach an unsigned junction. Go left here to stay on Smith Creek Road. At 4.5 miles, reach an unsigned junction. Go left/northwest onto a 2-track road and drive 0.7 miles to its end and a large turnaround/campsite area. Park here [5,430 feet; 43°33’27.1”N, 115°32’51.8”W].

The USGS topo map shows several side roads in this area that no longer exist. Don’t trust the map.

North Face/East Ridge, Class 2+

The Climb

This is a brutal, steep bushwhack and I do not recommend it. The northwest ridge may be a better option; follow a game trail west up to the head of the stream drainage to reach the northwest ridge from the parking area. Now I will describe my punishing route. From the parking area, bushwhack south across a small stream (Tiger Creek) and then bushwhack south up a steep, thick, brushy face that is tedious.

Upon finally reaching the crest of the east ridge, the going is much easier initially. Higher up on the east ridge, it becomes a battle with endless thick willows and other brush. Stay on the ridge crest to find any relief and/or minor game trails. The east ridge jogs left-ish/south to reach the semi-open, small summit. This is definitely the high point and lacks thick brush or willows. I descended a north shoulder (of sorts) and, although it did have a few easy, open sections, it was as bad or worse than the north face.
