Jumpoff Hill is somewhat of a misnomer. If you jump off this hill, you won’t fall very far. Jumpoff Hill is located on the southwest side of Dan Creek and above the headwaters of Bailey Creek in the foothills of the Caribou Mountains. USGS Jumpoff Hill

Access

From Exit 116/Sunnyside Road on I-15 in Idaho Falls, drive east on Sunnyside Road all the way to its end at a “T” junction with Bone Road. Drive south on Bone Road for 0.1 miles to a signed junction with Eagle Pass Road. Go left/east on Eagle Pass Road (which soon merges into Kepps Crossing Road) and drive 8.3 miles to a signed junction with Dan Creek Road. Reset your odometer here. Turn right/south onto Dan Creek Road and drive 7.2 miles to a cattle guard crossing and a sign for “Access Yes.” Park along the road at the Access Yes sign [6,175 feet; 43°19’14.6”N, 111°38’36.9”W].

The Climb

From the cattle guard, head south and follow a cattle trail on the left/east side of a fence row. The fence row drops 20 feet to cross Dan Creek (small or bone dry) then rises quickly and reaches a fence corner. Go right/southwest and follow an overgrown cattle trail on the left/southeast side of a fence row. Go through 2-3 cattle gates. The fence row temporarily ends then soon reappears. Just keep heading straight. The fence row eventually reaches a critical fence corner. The fence goes left/south here and steepens as it now climbs to the summit area of Jumpoff Hill.

Hike up the left/east side of the fence row as it goes up through a patch of aspens then reaches open ground and another fence corner. Go left/southeast here and follow the left/northeast side of the fence row to the summit area. Leave the fence row and scramble left/east up easy scrub to the bare summit. There was no summit cairn but there were signs of surveyor activity with a collection of boulders on the summit. I built a modest cairn on the high point. The terrain on this climb is thick field grass and scrub. Given how overgrown the cattle trails are in this area, wear pants for this one.
