Peak 7740 is a Lemhi foothill that sits above the confluence of Hayden Creek and Bear Valley Creek. It is most easily climbed from nearby FSR-008/Hayden Creek Road. USGS Hayden Creek

Access

From the hamlet of Lemhi (18 miles northwest of Leadore on ID-28), drive west on [signed] Lemhi Road for about a mile to a signed junction with Hayden Creek Road. Go left/southwest on Hayden Creek Road and reset your odometer. At 5.4 miles, reach an unsigned junction with Rye Grass Road (right). At 7.4 miles, reach the Salmon National Forest boundary. At 7.7 miles, reach a signed road junction. Go left here to stay on FSR-008/Hayden Creek Road. Drive another 0.4 miles up FSR-008 to a pullout that is just past a large logjam on Hayden Creek. Park here [6,032 feet; 44°46’01.4”N, 113°42’38.1”W].

The Climb

From the roadside pullout, walk briefly north down FSR-008 and find a weak game trail. Descend diagonally down this game trail to reach the large logjam on Hayden Creek. Cross this massive mess of downed logs and branches to reach the east side of Hayden Creek. Bushwhack briefly through bushes and brush to reach open scrub and a shoulder to the right/south. The crux of this climb is the descent and crossing of Hayden Creek.

Scramble east up this shoulder as it soon crosses a cattle fence then an old road bed not shown on maps. The terrain is easy, firm grass and short scrub with no forest. The spur ridge ends when it reaches the broad southwest shoulder at about 6,860 feet. Head left-ish/northeast up the easy, rounded shoulder in short grass/scrub with minimal gravel. This is a joy! The shoulder leads directly to the summit, which has a nearby cattle fence and gate. There is a summit cairn on the mound that is the highest point. There is a nearby mound of similar height. Stand atop both “just to be sure.”
