The Big Hill is more of a “big ridge” than a hill. Indeed, the USGS benchmark atop Big Hill is “Ridge.” Go figure. Thanks to a decent 2-track road coming up from well-maintained Crows Nest Road, this peak is a drive-up. USGS Notch Butte

Access

Crows Nest Road (a well-maintained BLM road) can be reached from the south via Balanced Rock Road (see Access for Balanced Rock and Castleford Butte for more details) or from the north via its junction with South Grindstone Road a few miles southeast of Twin Buttes, East and Twin Buttes, West (see Access for these peaks for more details on Grindstone Butte Road/South Grindstone Road).

From the southeast side of Twin Buttes, drive southwest on Crows Nest Road to reach Notch Butte and The Big Hill. Follow Crows Nest Road west then southwest then south until the road crosses the southeast ridge of The Big Hill and reaches an unsigned junction with a 2-track road that heads right/northwest up the ridge. Drive 1.6 miles up this decent 2-track road to the summit area and a large parking area.

The Climb

From the parking area, the USGS “Ridge” benchmark is about 20 feet away in short grass/scrub and has a metal post to mark it.
