The description in the book is somewhat misleading. The book entry is for the formation known as Black Tip, 8,292. The peak know as Black Tip Mountain is 8,500+ and is situated 0.4 miles to the southwest. The peak takes its name from the formation which sits on its northeast ridge.

This is the true summit of Black Tip Mountain which is found due south of the Black Tip Tower

Black Tip Mountain is an easy climb from the west, south and east.  Black Tip (the tower) is class 3 from the ridge that connects it with Black Tip Mountain. Its north face has the potential for a one to two pitch technical route, in case anyone is interested
