The description in the book is somewhat misleading. The book entry is for the formation known as Black Tip. The peak known as Black Tip Mountain is the high point of the massif and is located 0.4 miles to the southwest of Black Tip. The peak takes its name from the formation on its Northeast Ridge. This is the true summit of Black Tip Mountain which is found due south of the Black Tip Tower

Black Tip Mountain is an easy climb from the west, south and east.  Black Tip (the tower) is Class 3 from the ridge connecting it to Black Tip Mountain. Its North Face has the potential for a 1-2 pitch technical route, in case anyone is interested.
