Peak 8363 and Peak 8248 run north from the Steel Mountain/Bald Mountain ridge between Bald Mountain Creek to the west and James Creek to the east. The 360-degree view from the summit is splendid and includes a vast stretch of the Boise Mountains, the Soldier Mountains, the Smoky Mountains, and the Sawtooth Range. It also offers a birds-eye view of Atlanta. USGS Atlanta West

Access and Route, Class 1

FSR-126/Boulder Grade Creek/James Creek Road [(F)(1.1) on Page 155]. FSR-126 runs between Rocky Bar and Atlanta. Follow the road north from Rocky Bar for 8.0 miles. Turn left onto FSR-126B. FSR-126B climbs all the way to the summit of Peak 8248. The road reaches a good parking spot in 0.1 miles. FST-126 leaves from this spot but is not easy to spot. Hike up the steep road toward Peak 8248 a short distance and you will find the trail tread running off to the north. Follow the trail north to the saddle between Peak 8363 and Peak 8248 and then head up to the summit. It is 1.2 miles to the summit with 557 feet of elevation gain.
