This peak is found on page 170-171. There are two errors in the book. First, this peak is not also know as Flatrock Needle. Second, then route description in the book is for Flatrock Needle which is a formation located southeast of the summit at roughly 9,060 feet of elevation. I am responsible for these errors. The name was suggested by Lyman Dye. Published November 2025

Red Sentinel, along with its twin Peak 9980, is located on the main Sawtooth crest between Braxon Peak and Le Bec D’Aigle. Red Sentinel and Peak 9980 are two often overlooked technical summits. As far as I can tell neither of these two peaks are referenced in American Alpine Journal reports or reports by the Iowa Mountaineers. I credited Kaden Platt, Evan Hellmich, Derek Percoski, Taylor Amato with the first ascent although it is possible the peak was climbed by someone who didn’t report it. USGS Warbonnet Peak

Access and Route by Derek Percoski

Access and Northeast Couloir

Leave the Redfish Creek trail, FST-101 [(A)(6)(b) Page 206] at 7,300 feet (44.07581, -114.99021) and make a steep bushwhack up to the 8,900-foot unnamed lake. I have done this path several times and found that it is best to stay right. From the lake, head to the saddle northeast of the peak. There you’ll see the hidden pathway up—a steep, loose couloir. Next you’ll just follow the path of least resistance up class-4 terrain toward the summit. We made it to the summit boulder without a rope, but there was one section that I considered class-4+.

Ascending the filthy couloir just beyond the saddle. “One at a time” territory for our party.

The 5.3 summit boulder could almost be a bouldering problem, but the best holds are on the north side which open the climber up to bigger exposure. As shown in the photo, we have the belayer around back with a 240cm runner around a horn to prevent the draped rope from walking off the side. How did we sling the horn? Kaden had soloed the boulder without thinking twice so he was up there to set the pro. So you’ll need your own solution for the summit boulder.
