I recommend climbing Serene Peak from Hard Peak by following the connecting ridgeline north. The ridgeline is mostly open with good footing. The walk between the two peaks is less than a mile. You will gain and lose slightly more than 300 feet in the process. You can also traverse across the North Face of Hard Peak by leaving the trail that crosses that ridge at roughly 7,200 feet and picking your way through meadow, forest and downfall. I actually returned via this route and found the debris and footing along the way only slightly annoying. See the Hard Peak page for access information.
